A Different Kind of Dark at the New York Chocolate Show

New Yorkers are indulging in mounds of cocoa-based morsels at The New York Chocolate Show this weekend, and while attendees eat, sculptor Håkan Mårtensson will be crafting another masterpiece.

Mårtensson doesn’t focus on holiday-themed creations like cute Easter bunnies though. His sculptures capture a darker side of fantasy. He’s influenced by movies like Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter series, as well as his Swedish heritage which comes with a fondness for gnomes and trolls, he says.

This year, Mårtensson is spending all four days of the show working on a dragon as a reprieve from producing hundreds of handmade truffles and pralines every day.

While his that his work might scare away some children, the reactions he hears from some onlookers are pleasantly surprising.
