Kensington and Windsor Terrace Parents and Kids Gather For Safety Awareness Night

Parents and kids from the Kensington and Windsor Terrace neighborhoods in Brooklyn met at P.S. 130 tonight to address issues of safety for both children and adults. The meeting, which included presentations by the NYPD’s 72nd precinct as well as Democratic Councilman Brad Lander, featured a mix of official and grassroots organizations. It was organized by members of the Friends of Greenwood Playground, a local community group.

According to Dari Litchman, a member of the FOGP and tonight’s emcee, the event was originally scheduled after the murder of 8-year-old Leiby Kletzky in July, but was repeatedly postponed due to scheduling conflicts. As a series of sexual attacks against women have continued however, the group decided that the event should go forward.

Representatives from the Crime Prevention Division of the Brooklyn DA’s office, including Special Counsel to Schools Frank Leghezza, were also on hand, distributing handouts as well as taking fingerprints and Polaroids.

Joy Rich and Jodi introduced their new volunteer organization, the Kensington-Windsor Terrace K9 Watch. The group recruits volunteers to wear yellow bandanas when walking their dogs at night to provide a safe presence around the neighborhood’s subway stations.

Raul Pintos, the Commanding Officer of the 72nd Precinct, spoke for over half an hour about the status of the NYPD’s investigation of the Brooklyn sexual attacks. He also took questions and gave some common sense advice about how to stay safe when walking home at night.

The event was not a sellout, perhaps due in part to the inclement weather. But a number of families, as well as some residents whose children were not with them, stayed for the entire two hours.
